Michael Fassbender Covers Esquire UK

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Our June cover star is really enjoying his moment.

It’s been a hell of a few years for the 34-year-old having risen from relative obscurity to become one of the most talked about actors of his generation – with a whole new world of opportunities thrown in.

“It would be wrong of me to say that I don’t get seduced by certain things. That things don’t become tempting,” he admits.

“The thing is I don’t like to filter my behaviour, but I have a feeling that might be the case now…I don’t want to be in the newspapers. I just want to keep what I do on screen and that’s it.”

With a long list of recent credits including a starring role in Ridley Scott’s forthcoming sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus, Fassbender is now enjoying a self-imposed hiatus as he looks to the next phase in his career.

“The next thing is to develop, make your own stories with writers, gather a pool of creative people and develop stuff. So it’s not the fact that I’m waiting for someone else to hire me or I’m waiting for a really good script to arrive, I’m actually trying to make that script.”

Michael Wins Empire Hero Award

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Last night were the annual Jameson Empire Awards, and Fassy was the named Empire Hero! I have added pictures from the event, and below is an excerpt from his acceptance speech. I have also added pictures of him from WonderCon on March 17, with co-star Charlize Theron. Enjoy!

For our penultimate prize, it’s only getting more exciting. Jameson Irish Whiskey is responsible for the Empire Hero award this year, and a screenwriter both kick-ass and Kick-Ass is here to present it, in the shapely shape of Jane Goldman. This one goes to “an actor in their prime” to acknowledge their body of work. And this particular recipient has had a hell of a year.

Goldman: “The winner this year has often been described as sex on legs, but as it happens he’s also intelligence, charm, passion and vulnerability on legs as well. Film has always been his passion – he appeared in a stage version of Reservoir Dogs 14 years ago; since then he’s appeared in a Tarantino film. Whatever the genre, he grounds his characters in reality. He lost 3 stone in Hunger, he spanked Keira Knightley in A Dangerous Method and in Shame he bared all. But in each case he transcends actorly stunts. But perhaps his greatest performance of the last 12 months is the patience he’s shown in the face of continual questions from journalists about his physical assets.”

Yes, the winner is MICHAEL FASSBENDER.
Fassbender: “Well, this is kind of unusual, because I always wanted to be a superhero. The first job I wanted to do was be Superman, so a hero award makes it official now, thanks to Empire. It’s a magazine I actually always did read and follow as a film fan. And Jameson is my favourite whiskey, so this is pretty special!”

We highly recommend watching this speech as well for his definition of “male heroism”. “Someone’s getting free Jameson forever,” notes Laverne.

Michael Fassbender In Talks For “The Mountain Between Us”

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

“X-Men: First Class” and “Prometheus” star Michael Fassbender may be staying in business with 20th Century Fox, as he’s in early talks to topline Gerardo Naranjo’s romantic drama “The Mountain Between Us.”

J. Mills Goodloe’s script, based on the novel by Charles Martin, follows two strangers who survive a plane crash in the Colorado woods and are forced to rely on one another for survival, eventually falling in love.

If a deal comes together, Fassbender would play Ben Trace, a doctor and avid climber who uses his skills to transport an injured writer named Ashley down a mountain in harsh weather.

Michael Fassbender Commits to “The Counselor”

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Michael Fassbender has committed to star in The Counselor, the Cormac McCarthy-scripted thriller that Ridley Scott is making his next film. Deadline told you February 9 that Scott went right to Fassbender, who stars in Prometheus for Scott and 20th Century Fox. Scott has landed one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, is eyeing a May 1 start date, and talking to a number of high-profile actors to take part in a film that insiders are describing as “No Country For Old Men on steroids.” The Counseloris reminiscent of the rough-and-tumble world depicted in the Oscar-winning adaptation of McCarthy’s novel No Country For Old Men. The protagonist is a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation.

“X-Men: First Class” Sequel to Focus on Magneto

Friday, February 17th, 2012

If I had my way, we X-Men: First Class fans would be getting a sequel this summer. Or this week, for that matter. Unfortunately I don’t get my way and we’re going to have to wait awhile for a few of the most in-demand actors in the business right now to get some free time to suit-up again. Also there is the matter of needing a script from which to work.

MTV News recently caught up with the sequel’s screenwriter Simon Kinberg at the premiere of his latest film, This Means War, where we discussed his plans for Magneto, Xavier and the rest.

“I don’t know what the title is going to be but certainly I’m working on the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class’ right now,” Kinberg said. “I’m going to be writing and producing it, I’m starting now, with Matthew Vaughn directing.”

When asked about what he enjoys most about incorporating so many characters into the story, Kinberg first emphasized his fanboy-ness, along with excitement to further explore the many layers of Magneto and Charles Xavier.

“I’m a huge X-Men fan. I grew up loving the comic books and it was really exciting to be able to do the origin story of Xavier and Magneto, and getting those two actors, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender, were really amazing,” he said. “So being able to explore those characters with actors of that quality will be exciting a second time around, and doing some things unexpected with those characters, which is the plan.”

“That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue,” Kinberg said of exploring the supervillain’s tortured beginnings. “Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.”

So with the sequel will Magneto still be bridging the gap between good and bad or will he be a full-on villain?

“We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto, he says ‘Call me Magneto’ at the end of the first movie.”
